Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum tetracyline antibiotic that attacks bacterias causing infection or in other cases hinders their growth. It is commonly used to treat several infections of the skin, bone, stomach, respiratory tract, sinuses, ear and urinary tract

The Doxycycline capsules of 100 mg and 50 mg, taken orally, contain Doxycycline monohydrate that is equivalent to 100 mg or 50 mg of Doxycycline respectively. It also contain inactive ingredients such as gelatin, titanium dioxide, colloidal silicon dioxide, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and sodium starch glycolate. The 50 mg capsule contains other ingredients D&C Yellow 6 and D&C Yellow 10. and 100 mg capsule also contains additional ingredients that include black, yellow and red iron oxide.

Doxycycline is mostly used to treat the following infections: uncomplicated gonococcal infections (for adults, except in cases of anorectal infections in men) at 100 mg every 12 hours during 7 days; nongonococcal urethritis due to C. trachomatis and U. urealyticum at 100 mg every 12 hours for a duration of at least 7 days; serious epididymo-orchitis that was caused by N. gonorrhoeae at 100 mg for a duration of at least 10 days; and Chlamydia trachoma is at 100 mg for a duration of at least 7 days among other infections.

The recommended dose of Doxycycline for adults is 200 mg on the initial day of the treatment, either 50 mg each 6 hours or 100 mg each 12 hours. Afterwards the usual dose will be of 100 mg per day. (administered 100 mg every 12 hours or 50 mg every 6 hours) followed by a maintenance dose of 100 mg/day. When treating severe chronic infections however, 200 mg/day might be prescribed.
